The Schare House
Historical Overview
A 2-story, with front shed dormer stands at 182 Washington Road in the historic West Windsor community of Penns Neck. This property - hereafter called the Schare house - is also a member of West Windsor's "100 Club."
According to township tax records, this house was constructed in 1895.[1] At the time, West Windsor was an agricultural community with farmland stretching across thee landscape. The property's first known owners were Garfield and Mary Pierson, who in 1925, sold this house to Walter and Elizabeth "Bessie" Schare.[2] Walter, the had of the camera department at the Princeton University Store, was also a locally well-known photographer who pioneered the filming of football games for the purpose of coaching purposes.[3] Meanwhile, Bessie was an active volunteer in the Princeton Hospital and with the Red Cross.[4]
Walter died in 1966[5] and Elizabeth in 1985.[6] However, four years prior to her passing, Elizabeth deeded the property to her son, W. Robert Schare.[7] In 1985, the property passed to Peter Pfaffeenroth[8] and the next year, George E. Coughlin purchased the house.[9] After George passed in 1996,[10] the property passed to a new family.[11]
