Montgomery Berrien House
Historical Overview
A five-bay. two-story wood framed building once stood at 3723 Brunswick Pike in the Historic West Windsor community of Penns Neck. This was the Montgomery Berrien House.
The structure was reputedly constructed circa 1830.[1] Montgomery Berrien purchased this property from the assignees of Henry B. Van Doren in 1834.[2] (Middlesex County Deed. vol.27. p.295. 28 June 1834). According to the deed the property contained a house at this time. Van Doren. who presumably built the house, purchased the vacant lot from Charles M. Campbell in 1829[3] Berrien owned the property until 1852. when he sold it to William Fisher.[4] In 1870 William Fisher sold the property to Thomas Jewell, owner of the adjacent Kovenhoven-Jewell homestead.[6] Jewell may have used the building as a tenent house for his farmworkers.
Over the ensuing decades, the house continued to be used, but was ultimately demolished some time in the 1990s[7] or early 2000s.[8]
