Crandall House
Historical Overview
Standing at 167 Washington Road is a wood-framed American four-square house with enclosed front porch. This house is a member of West Windsor's "100 Club" and a contributing element to the historic West Windsor community of Penns Neck.
According to township tax records, this house was constructed in 1923 - concurrent to the houses at 169 and 165 Washington Road[1] and, given their proximity, perhaps by the same builder. However, the Historical Society has not yet uncovered who built the house. The earliest confirmed owners are Alice and William Crandall who, in 1943, sold this property to Antonie Diaforli Sr. and Angelina Diaforli.[2] The Crandalls were owners of a longtime Princeton establishment called "Nill's Bakery."[3],[4] Immediately after World War II, William was also a member of "American Relief for Central Europe," a group that aimed to send food and supplies to the war-torn continent.[5]
In 1954, the Diaforlis sold the house to Juan Gonzalez Rodrigues and Mary Gonzalez Rodrigues.[6] It then passed to Vittorio and Vicenzina Pirone in 1960,[7] Charles Egner Jr. and Janet Egner in 1964,[8] Stephen and Jeanne Philips in 1971,[9] Kilin and Cecilia To in 1976,[10] Samueel and Marlene Gralnick in 1977,[11] Anthony and Maria Davidson in 1979,[12] and finally Roger and Maria Page in 1984.[13] The house has presumably since passed to other owners.
