West Windsor's Historic Sites

Overview

Below is an interactive map showcasing over 250 sites in West Windsor that are at least a century old and/or significant to the township's history. A legend is provided on the lower left of the map to help guide your exploration. Under the map is a spreadsheet with three tabs on the bottom. These tabs, which link to descriptions of every one of these sites, are instrumental to understanding the map:

  1. Extant Sites: Historic buildings and landmarks that still remain in West Windsor. These are marked on the map with blue circles and corresponding numbers.
  2. Extant Sites - Methodology: The 11 sources that were used to determine the dates of origin of these sites.
  3.  Disappeared Sites: While most demolished sites' histories are lost to the ages, some - such as those along Meadow Road, the airport that used to operate along Brunswick Pike, or Newton Mount's house in Edinburg - are well documented. Keep in mind that this map only shows the sites described on this website; we do not want to give our readers the impression that hundreds of historic homes haven't been torn down during the last century!

  • Note 1: Due to its interactive nature, the map is best viewed using a tablet or personal computer and external mouse. If none are available, click here for a PDF copy of the map and click here for a PDF copy of the index.
  • Note 2: Locations and boundaries are approximate and based on Google Earth data in conjunction with site visits and the township's 1991 Natural Resource Inventory.
  • Note 3: As this endeavor is grand in scope, there will inevitably be discrepancies in the dates of construction recorded by different sources. Please email us if you have documentation of a building that you believe corroborates or disagrees with ours, or could be used to narrow down the range of dates for a site without a certain year of construction!
  • Note 4: Finally, and perhaps most importantly, those sites whose dates are listed with an asterisk (roughly 60 sites) are ones whose documentation presented a range of dates so large that we are providing a likely date of origin. If you would like to understand how we arrived at the estimates for these sites in particular, please consult the "Extant Sites - Methodology" tab in the spreadsheet at the bottom of this page.
