The Bergen House
Overview
Located on the outskirts of Grovers Mill at 474 Cranbury Road, this building sits just south of the Millstone River on a wooded rise. Various records of the township suggest a construction date of c. 1790. Both the 1849 and 1875 maps of West Windsor shows ownership by a "J. S. Bergen," and the latter map indicates that the house was owned by a farm family that operated 155 acres of agrarian land:

The house is a very long 2-story clapboard house, built in 3 or 4 sections, flush on the front. The 6-bay building has a slightly off-center entrance, slightly asymmetrical windows with 6x6 and Victorian era 2x2 windows of varying sizes and a flush, flat-roofed 1 bay wing. The rear provides a clue to the original section, now a kitchen. This easternmost part projects beyond the rest of the main block and features a tall interior end chimney, and was possibly constructed in the 18th century. This original section could be the house of one of the area's original Dutch settlers.
